Riot Games has just announced their upcoming Ruination Event, the Rise of the Sentinels. The event will apparently run across all the studio’s games, including League of Legends, Wild Rift, Legends of Runeterra, Teamfight Tactics, and Valorant. But what exactly is Rise of the Sentinels and what should we expect? Who is Akshan and is he the next League of Legends champion?
During the last few days, Riot Games has dropped hints that a new event is coming to League of Legends, one that we now know as Rise of the Sentinels. The event is tied to the Ruination, which started with the release of Viego, the Ruined King in January. Viego is tied to the Runeterra lore so tightly that one can say that huge chunks of its backstory are possible because of him. Shadow Isles are created due to Viego and we wouldn’t have Gwen if it wasn’t for him. Also, Lucian, Senna, and Thresh’s lore wouldn’t be one of the most loved if it wasn’t for him.
Apart from the event, which will most likely release with new skins and the Ultimate Spellbook game mode, the event’s poster holds yet another hint. A new champion for League of Legends. According to Surrender@20, the new champion, Akshan is a Sentinel of Light and has some Shurima vibes that we can’t quite shake off.
Interestingly, the Sentinels of Light landing page in the official League of Legends website, includes a cool ARG that holds hints about the upcoming event. The ARG includes Viego, Gwen, and subsequently Akshan as the next League of Legends champion.
It will be interesting to see how the Rise of the Sentinels event will fit into the other Riot Games’ titles and most importantly Valorant. The event starts on July 8th and will conclude on August 10th. We await for more information to appear so that we have the full picture of the Sentinels of Light backstory.
