As part of the League of Legends 13.5 Patch Notes Riot has announced that they are significantly changing Plated Steelcaps.
The changes are a major buff to the item as it now will grant damage reduction against a much wider variety of damage abilities. In short, Plated Steelcaps will now block damage from not only strictly auto attacks but also auto-attack spells. Here is a full list of every ability the new change will affect:
