Riot Games has taken a bold yet important step into the modernization of the League of Legends client by introducing the Riot ID in the place of the existing Summoner name. Although the change comes with mixed feelings from the community, we’ve seen far bigger changes through the years.
According to the latest news, starting on November 20th, the League of Legends summoner names will belong to the past. In their place, we’ll see the introduction of Riot ID into LoL, a standard for modern multi-game clients right now. As a result, players will find a free name change available so that they can start their new identity in League of Legends, on November 20th.
On November 20, 2023, we’ll be phasing out the usage of “Summoner Names” and moving all players exclusively to Riot IDs to create a more unified experience across all our games.
The official announcement states that each League of Legends player will have one free Riot ID change per year. If you want to do another change earlier than that, you’ll need to spend in-game currency. The price, according to League leaker @LeagueOfLeaks is approximately $10.
Despite the backlash, Riot’s decision to remove summoner names from League of Legends will come with its benefits. You can now use the name you want without having to use accents and numbers. In addition, you can keep track of long friend lists easier, since fewer and fewer players will change their names frequently.
For what it’s worth, players are not feeling the need to switch to Riot ID right now. Some believe that their nicknames will be picked up by many players. In fact, this is particularly important for content creators. Some others feel that changing their name to fit their current main champion or favorite character fits them better. However, the change is imminent and we all have to pick our names wisely this time.
