The Quarterfinals stage of Worlds 2023 is officially over after today’s LNG vs T1 series and it’s time for a quick recap of what we saw this week. With the semifinal matches set for next week, 3 LPL and 1 LCK team remain contending for the World Championship title and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Which teams did not make the cut?
NRG VS WBG
In the first series of the Worlds 2023 semifinals, we saw the first seed of the LCS taking on WeiboGaming. Although the North American contender had tough luck going against Weibo and its star TheShy. Light, the WBG AD Carry took it upon himself to carry the series, giving his team a much-needed upper hand in team fights while WeiWei and TheShy showed that they are a power to fear when it comes to risky decisions. NRG didn’t get a minute’s rest in the series, which ended in a saddening 0-3 for WBG, sending the last-standing LCS team back home.
GEN VS BLG
This is by far one of the best series in the quarterfinals since it all came down to Silver Scrapes for it to end. BLG got the upper hand pretty quickly, sending the series to a 0-2. GEN adapted to their opponents’ playstyle on the third game, taking the win and moving to game 4 where Peyz and Chovy took it upon themselves to bring the series to game 5. Sadly, the last game didn’t turn in their favor, since Yagao and XUN showed how much they want a spot in the final 4. As a result, BLG is the second team qualifying for the semifinals.
JDG VS KT
The third quarterfinal match had a clear favorite and it’s no other than JDG. The LPL team is deemed the best team in the world right now, after stomping games left and right this year. KT came strong into the series, winning the first game in a quick fashion with Aiming and BDD setting the pace for the whole Summoner’s Rift.
However, the rest of the matches wouldn’t come as easily since JDG adapted their drafts and playstyle super fast, resulting in Kanavi, 369 and Ruler stomping game 2. In game 3, we saw both teams playing as equals although the mid and bot gold difference gave JDG the edge they needed to get their second win of the day. Moving on to game 4, Ruler proved why he is one of the best, if not the best ADC in the world right now, finishing his Kai’Sa game with a massive 8-0-2 score, carrying the weight of the team to victory.
LNG VS T1
Today’s match and the final series of the quarterfinals saw LNG going against T1, the last LCK team to be fighting for a spot in the semifinals. Even if T1’s performance through the year came with its ups and downs with Faker stepping down from his role due to an injury, their form in the quarters couldn’t be better. T1 showed complete dominance in all 3 games, keeping the LCK dream alive and pitting them against the tournament favorites: JDG in the semifinals.
That’s it for our Worlds 2023 quarterfinals recap. It all comes to down to next week to know which two teams will be the contenders for the final spots. More specifically, WBG will face BLG in the first best-of-5 series of the semifinals while JDG will go against T1 on the next day.
